The Edge: May 2026

The Edge: May 2026

The April/May 2026 edition of The Edge brings together key developments across construction, infrastructure, rail, procurement, sustainability and wider market conditions.

This edition reflects a sector that continues to move forward through innovation, technology and long-term investment, while also facing familiar challenges around cost pressure, supply chain resilience, skills shortages, compliance and project delivery risk.

Key themes in this edition include:

  • Continued innovation across rail and infrastructure, including trackside wind turbines, AI-enabled asset monitoring, digital rail safety tools and technology designed to support more reliable, efficient networks.
  • Growing use of low carbon materials, renewable power and electric equipment, with updates covering low carbon concrete, sustainable asphalt, green hydrogen power, electric haulers, electric trucks and emissions-free construction compounds.
  • A stronger focus on AI, data and digital systems, from AI-assisted design and costing tools to fleet asset tracking, digital maintenance platforms, automated site reporting and digital skills passports.
  • Increased scrutiny around procurement, governance and delivery, including council procurement failures, the CMA’s recommendations for road and rail infrastructure procurement, and the reset of the Government Major Projects Portfolio.
  • Ongoing market volatility, with contractors and subcontractors facing weekly material price checks, rising build costs, steel tariff uncertainty, fuel surcharges and continued concern around inflation and supply chain pressure.
  • Continued investment in nationally significant infrastructure and regeneration, including Small Modular Reactors, data centres, logistics parks, hospital rebuilds, transport masterplans and major regeneration schemes.
  • Developments in safety, training and competence, including changes to CIS fraud rules, upgraded CSCS checks, safety test fraud sentencing, construction bootcamps, welding training, asbestos apprenticeships and proposed changes to RIDDOR reporting.

The edition also continues to highlight contractors and key suppliers entering administration, being restructured or facing trading difficulties. This remains an important market indicator, particularly as cashflow pressure, delayed project starts, rising costs and cautious client decision-making continue to affect the construction supply chain.
